The direct successor to the McLaren 650S, the 720S embodies McLaren’s relentless quest to push the limits of possibility. Introduced as the second-generation Super Series, the supercar product family at the heart of the McLaren brand, the 720S is a multiple award winner, receiving worldwide praise from media outlets and automotive specialists. Lighter, stronger and faster than its predecessor, the 720S possesses unparalleled levels of interior space and sophistication and a breadth and depth of abilities that will engage and exhilarate the driver.
The beating heart of the 720S is a new and fearsomely powerful 4.0 litre twin turbocharged M840T engine, continuing the lineage of McLaren’s multiple-award-winning V8 engine series. Every part of the power unit is refined to maximise power, sharpen responses, and increase fuel efficiency, resulting in a power output of 710bhp and 568 lb ft of torque. Performance is truly astonishing: standstill to 62mph (100km/h) takes 2.9 seconds and just 4.9 seconds later the car has passed the 124mph (200km/h) mark on its way to a maximum speed of 212mph (341km/h). Braking is equally impressive, coming to a halt from 124mph (200km/h) in just 4.6 seconds, covering 117m.
Benefitting from innovative developments of the technology first seen in the McLaren P1 hypercar, the 720S possesses the MonoCage II at its core: a one-piece carbon fibre tub that now includes the roof. This high-strength, low-weight passenger cell provides unrivalled rigidity, resulting in thrilling driving dynamics and exceptional protection. A new generation of McLaren’s Proactive Chassis Control, new suspension and the established excellence of McLaren’s power-assisted, electro-hydraulic steering, all combine to deliver huge reserves of grip, balance and performance and an unmatched breadth of dynamic capabilities.
One glance at the 720S identifies it as a bold reinterpretation of McLaren’s design language; rooted in aerodynamic principles, the beautiful form has nothing superfluous about it: immediately and undeniably a McLaren, the new 720S is arguably the most distinctive and remarkable McLaren yet. One of the key points in the design of the new McLaren 720S is the absence of radiator intakes on the side of the car; this function is carried out by the unique ‘double skin’ aerodynamic form of the dihedral doors, which channel air to the high – temperature radiators that cool the mid-mounted engine. The smooth flow of the exterior lines manipulates onrushing air to reduce drag and cool the engine. Slim pillars on the teardrop-shaped cabin allow for the extraordinary glass canopy that floods the interior with daylight and offers unrivalled visibility. The majestic twin-hinged dihedral doors are one of the most alluring design features of the 720S. Like a geometric work of art, the doors sweep forwards and up, to make entering and exiting effortless and elegant.
